Europe and Values: A Tragedy

After receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, which was not entirely unjustified in view of history, the European Union should urgently apply for an “Order Against Animal Seriousness”! Because while the joint photo Just as Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s meeting with dictator and warmonger Ilham Aliyev a few weeks ago was not without a certain comical quality, the EU’s gas agreement with Azerbaijan is even more absurd in terms of content: The shock over the war in Ukraine seems to have overshadowed the already rather vague memory of the War over Nagorno-Karabakh to have completely wiped out the country. A "reliable partner" who constantly threatens the destruction of a neighboring country. A dream!

It fits the picture

In the systemic conflict with China and Russia, the self-proclaimed moral superpower EU is permanently dwarfing itself – once again, it must be added. Whether it is surveillance, refugee policy or dealing with autocrats like the Sultan of the Bosporus (with whom Mrs. von der Leyen was at least allowed to on the couch): The EU Commission, under the leadership of its “democratically” elected chair, is currently not presenting a good image.

Incompetence takes its toll. Germany, in particular, is now paying the price for decades of opportunism towards regimes where “change through trade” worked, especially in the area of economic and military capabilities. Whether Kohl, Schröder, or Merkel: The primacy of the economy over Human rights is currently blowing up in the faces of companies. Corporate Governance Until now, many companies have viewed it primarily as annoying paperwork.

Opportunism instead of attitude

The situation is serious. Both for prosperity in Germany and Europe, and for the global future of democracy, which currently seems anything but secure even in the West. In the USA, an autocrat's attempted coup was just barely averted. In France, the election victory of an anti-democratic candidate was just barely prevented. In Hungary, it is already too late.

The “watchdogs of democracy” often have bite inhibition – for very different reasons. The timidity with which declared Navalny supporters in the German media support the equally persecuted Julian Assange – or even defame him – speaks for itself. opportunism is dangerous not only against autocrats. He is also dangerous against allies and especially against his own government.
