Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: Germany's role

Only at first glance does the conflict in the Caucasus surrounding the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is mainly inhabited by Armenian Christians, seem far away. Against the backdrop of the Turkish President's neo-Ottoman imperial fantasies, German arms deliveries to Turkey, and the German Empire's involvement in the Genocide of 1,5 million Armenians the crisis is getting very close politically.

As a result of the war of annihilation against the Armenian civilian population, which was continued under the founder of the state, Mustafa Kemal “Atatürk”, who is still revered in Turkey today, the Treaty of Sèvres The territories of Western Armenia, which had been granted to them by the victorious Allied powers, came under Turkish control around 100 years ago. Despite the recognition of the genocide by numerous governments and parliaments around the world, the Turkish government continues to deny it and threatens Armenia with a pincer movement with Azerbaijan, which it considers a brother Turkic people.

And Germany? Did it deliver a Record number of weapons and billions of euros in the context of the EU accession negotiations and the refugee agreement. The involvement of the German Empire in the "first genocide of the 20th century" (Pope Francis) is still largely unknown in this country. However, it was only the military backing of the Empire that opened the window of opportunity for the Young Turk government to carry out the systematic deportation and mass murder of 1,5 million men, women, and children. Similar to the profiteers of the Nazi regime, a new class of wealthy people emerged in Turkey on the basis of the collective robbery and murder of the Armenian civilian population.

The current political stance in Turkey, even among the supposedly enlightened Kemalist opposition, is extremely dangerous for Armenia. Germany is limiting itself to non-binding appeals for peace. However, in the case of Armenia, there is no mention of "reasons of state," such as Israel's security, which the German government considers important. Thus, Armenia's only remaining ally is Russia, which has sold weapons to all parties to the conflict and also maintains good relations with Azerbaijan.

By the way: In 1939, at the beginning of the second major genocide of the 20th century, Hitler should be in front of the Wehrmacht dismissed possible objections to the mass murder with the remark “Who talks about the extermination of the Armenians today?” In school lessons, the genocide is also presented against the background successful political influence Turkey has hardly been taken into account in Germany to date.
