Gaza: Defamation of journalists

From C.V.

Media

Anyone who criticizes the genocidal actions of Netanyahu's government in Gaza is denounced as "anti-Semitic." United Nations, the International Criminal Court or Amnesty International, to name just a few. Clearly, this is calculated slander.

For journalists in Gaza, this term is to be taken literally: not only are they labelled as “terrorists” on the basis of dubious accusations, sometimes fabricated by a special unit of the Israeli military, but also a hundredfold targeted and murdered.

A special unit in Israel’s military was tasked with identifying reporters it could smear as undercover Hamas fighters, to target them and to blunt international outrage over the killing of media workers, an Israeli-Palestinian investigation has found. (…) According to the report, in at least one case the unit misrepresented information in order to falsely describe a journalist as a militant, a designation that in Gaza is in effect a death sentence.

The Guardian

There is no reporting on this in the German media. Instead, there is plenty uncritically adopted Military prose about terrorists supposedly disguised as journalists. This context should be familiar when reading the following press release from ZDF today:

ZDF welcomes the Israeli military's request to clarify the identity of the slain employee of the PMP production company in Gaza. The 37-year-old, an engineer responsible for the broadcasting system, was allegedly a member of the terrorist organization Hamas. A corresponding document was presented as evidence.

Press release ZDF

The extent to which the "document" was verified and what it actually is remains unclear. There is also no mention of the young son of another employee, whose death was at least mentioned in an initial statement about the attack on the broadcast van of the TV production company that has been working for the Mainz-based broadcaster for decades. Instead, there is only a note that the collaboration is being terminated for the time being.

The reports about it in Germany this Monday? Accordingly.
